Psychological First Aid has a focus on practical and emotional support and is frequently recommended by experts as the best available recovery-oriented response to assist an individual who has experienced a traumatic event. This article recently published in the Journal of Traumatic Stress failed to identify any controlled studies concerning the effectiveness of communication strategies delivered by lay persons. There was limited evidence that positive communication in a family context, and the expression of feelings by the affected individual, were associated with improved mental health outcomes.
