This study recently published in Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology found that US veterans with PTSD who reported their closest loved ones encouraged them to face things that made them anxious or uncomfortable were twice as likely to complete evidence-based psychological treatment compared to those who reported they did not receive this sort of encouragement. The implication for practitioners is to routinely explain the rationale for trauma-focussed treatments to family members and carers and assess how open they are to this approach.
